What is Broad Band Light (BBL)?

Broadband light utilizes multiple wavelengths of light to treat brown spots, broken blood vessels, and rosacea. BBL also stimulates collagen and improves skin texture. Almost any area can be treated, including the face, neck, arms, legs, and chest.

With aging and years of sun exposure, many people develop brown spots, redness, broken blood vessels, fine lines and wrinkles. Broad band light (BBL) uses high intensity light to produce a more even skin tone. The energy delivered by BBL also gently heats the upper layers of the skin, stimulating the production of new collagen. BBL can also be used for the treatment of acne and rosacea.

Who is a Good Candidate for treatment with BBL?

The best candidates for BBL treatment are skin types 1-4 and have uneven pigmentation (freckles and sun spots), redness, and broken blood vessels.

How Does BBL Work?

BBL is a type of light technology. However, BBL is a more advanced and powerful type. BBL hand pieces are equipped with state-of-the-art cooling features, enabling the comfortable and safe delivery of high-powered energy.

BBL works by delivering broad-spectrum light to the skin. The energy is absorbed by the brown pigment (melanin) and the hemoglobin in blood vessels that contributes to redness, and the pigment and hemoglobin are eliminated.

The heat from the light energy also helps stimulate collagen production, thereby smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles.

Most patients require 4 BBL sessions to achieve their desired results. Sessions last approximately 30-60 minutes, depending on the areas being treated, and are scheduled at four week intervals.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Sciton BBL Treatment

At Compass Dermatology, you’ll start with a consultation with one of our expert laser esthetician’s and a board-certified dermatologist. If you are a good candidate for BBL, a course of 4 monthly treatments will typically be recommended.

Tanned skin cannot be treated with BBL. Apply sunscreen daily and also avoid self-tanners and spray tans prior to your treatment. Discontinue skin care products with active ingredients (including retinol, tretinoin, glycolic acid, salicyclic acid) seven days prior to your appointment and avoid chemical peels for three weeks. If you have a history of cold sores, consider starting an antiviral medication the day prior to your treatment.

Before your treatment begins, your skin will be cleansed and a clear gel will be applied to the areas to be treated. Your eyes will be protected with metal eye shields. BBL treatment is not painful, but there can be a slightly uncomfortable sensation of warmth or a feeling similar to the snap of a rubber band against your skin. BBL Hero is equipped with advanced cooling features, increasing the comfort of the treatment.

Following your treatment, your skin will feel warm and will be slightly red. Some patients develop mild to moderate swelling for a few days, which is often most evident around the eyes. A non-sedating antihistamine often helps to diminish this. Brown spots typically appear darker following your treatment, and then lift off over the following week. You are able to apply sunscreen and makeup immediately following your treatment and can return to your regular activities. Avoid active ingredients for one week following BBL and be sure to avoid scrubbing or picking any flaking skin.

BBL FAQ

BBL stands for BroadBand Light, an intense pulsed light device manufactured by Sciton. It resolves complexion issues such as redness, pigmentation irregularities, rosacea and wrinkles.

Most patients will require 4-6 BBL sessions to achieve their desired results, each scheduled four weeks apart. However, your dermatologist will assess your skin and give you a better idea of what you'll need to achieve your goals.
