Healthy Skincare Routines for Teens (Not Found on TikTok)
"What's the best skincare routine for a 13-year-old?"
It’s old news that social media loves pushing the latest skincare trends—and teens love to follow them. After all, being a teenager is tough to begin with. Add the pressure to look smartphone camera-ready at all times, and it can be even more challenging.
But before your teens start mixing up a concoction of potions to apply to their face, it’s always a good idea for them to take a moment and consider what their skin actually needs.
Thankfully, young skin is typically flexible enough to bounce back from abuse caused by changing hormones, growth spurts, and various teachable moments. In our experience, however, it’s often best to avoid treating teen skin with powerful products that are usually applied on fully-developed adults.
Instead, help your teens focus on developing strong foundational skincare habits:
- Wash once to twice daily with a gentle cleanser.
- Follow up with a moisturizer.
- Use daily sunscreen for protection.
After all this, does your teen still want to try a new routine? Ask what results they’re looking for or what issue they want to resolve. For example, is their skin particularly sensitive? Acne-prone? Overly oily or dry? Scarred or damaged? Help them learn to listen to their body and respond to its changing needs. Most importantly, reassure them that they’re beautiful inside and out—in every season of their life.
If they’re experiencing serious skin concerns, feel free to talk to our team. We have plenty of experience working with skin of all ages, and we can recommend products, treatments, and routines to help your teens look and feel confident.
