Don’t Just Growl about Your Jowls—Treat Them!

The hard truth about aging? As time marches on, skin often gets thinner. (And saggier.)

If you’re starting to see the skin on your face and neck lose elasticity, you’re not alone. But you don’t have to sit back and let it happen, either. Today, we’re taking a look at jowls—and what can be done about them.

What are jowls? Jowls are the sagging, loose skin that develops below the jawline. This condition is caused by age, lack of skin elasticity, and loss of collagen. It’s not the same thing as turkey neck—but it’s similar. Jowls begin to develop as early as the mid-30s, though skin can actually start to get looser as early as the mid-20s.

What’s the deal? While youthful features tend to have clear edges, with the jaw acting as the "scaffolding of the face," aging becomes more obvious with the presence of jowls. That’s because jowls soften and blur definition along the jawline, changing the shape of the face.

How do you treat jowls? Jawline contouring is a great way to reduce the appearance of jowls and restore a more youthful definition in the face. This practice requires an artistic eye to enhance and bring back the natural features of each patient—and look attractive from all angles after treatment.

At Compass Dermatology, we use a variety of non-surgical treatments for jawline contouring, including the following:

Of course, a combination of treatments usually provides the best results—and everything depends on the condition of your skin and your specific goals.
