What is PRP Hair Restoration?
PRP hair restoration is a treatment that utilizes the growth factors of platelet rich plasma (PRP) to maintain and increase and sustain hair growth. Platelets extracted from your blood are injected into the areas of your scalp with thinning hair.
While PRP therapy is not yet Health Canada approved for hair loss, research suggests that PRP is effective for halting the progression of age-related hair loss and increasing hair density.
All PRP hair restoration treatments are performed by our board-certified dermatologists.
Who is a candidate for PRP Hair Restoration?
Hair restoration with PRP is suitable for men and women of any skin type. In general, it may be a good choice if:
- You suffer from androgenic alopecia, a genetic condition that causes thinning hair and baldness in men and women. It may also be referred to as male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss.
- You want to see results quickly. An improvement in hair growth can typically be seen within 3-6 months.
- You don't want to undergo hair transplant surgery or take medications. Surgery involves a lengthy recovery. Side effects related to PRP, on the other hand, are minimal. These include temporary irritation, swelling, bruising, itching, discolouration and tenderness, all of which go away in a couple of days.
Hair restoration with PRP is more effective when treating patients with thinning hair, rather than those who are bald.
How Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?
PRP is rich in growth factors that stimulate the growth of new follicles and lengthen the growth (anagen) phase of hair follicles to promote new hair growth.
A study that followed patients for 2 years found that PRP was able to increase the number of hairs grown in the treated area by an average of 33.6, with an average increase in total hair density of 45.9 hairs per cm2. The number of blood vessels around the hair follicles also increased, and each hair strand was thicker.
Most patients require 3-6 PRP treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart to start, with maintenance treatments every 3 months. Results are noticeable within 3-6 months.
Our Comprehensive Approach to PRP Hair Restoration
PRP hair restoration is an injectable treatment that requires a medical assessment with one of our board-certified dermatologists. A discussion of your medical history and goals are needed to determine whether this treatment is safe for you.
The treatment itself is relatively straightforward and takes well under an hour. A small amount of your blood is taken then placed in a centrifuge to separate the blood from the platelet rich plasma (PRP). This PRP is then processed and then injected into the specific areas of your scalp where your hair is thinning. This activates hair follicles so new hair can grow.
Once your treatment is finished, you'll be free to go home. Some Post-treatment care instructions will be given to you.
