A Rose by Any Other Name? Unboxing Botox®, Neuromodulators & Fillers
The word “Botox” is pretty common nowadays, especially in the beauty community—so many people think they know what it does. But do they really? Today, we’re tackling some popular misconceptions about the treatment that’s made such a lasting impact.
The Backstory on Botox
Like Kleenex is to tissue and Band-Aid is to bandage, Botox is actually a brand name for a category of treatments known as neuromodulators—not fillers, as some have mistakenly understood. Although both deal with the effects of aging on the face, they’re very different in practise.
Neuromodulators like Botox temporarily relax muscle movement and, when injected in the face, smooth out lines and prevent movement that leads to deeper wrinkles. That’s why many people think Botox freezes your face—but a good practitioner will minimize this effect so that it’s hardly noticeable. Neuromodulators can also be used to treat migraines, muscle stiffness, and excessive sweating in other areas. In Canada, Xeomin®, Dysport®, and Nuceiva™ are other brands of neuromodulators that are frequently used for these applications as well.
The Facts about Fillers
Fillers address similar concerns—but with a different approach. This treatment is generally made of a hyaluronic acid gel, which binds to water beneath the dermal layer and adds volume to the skin. With strategic planning, dermatologists use fillers to literally fill out lines and improve the overall structure of the face by plumping areas like cheeks, under-eyes, lips, and other locations.
Generally speaking, neuromodulators address dynamic lines on the face, while fillers focus on volume loss and folds. What about at the appointment, though? Both are relatively quick and painless injection-based treatments, requiring a series of needles followed by about 2 weeks to allow full, gorgeous results to manifest.
